There was a kind of wake when the court finally closed 20 years back. A crowd of people who'd known the place turned up to mourn and to reminisce.

I'd been at the court many times over the previous several decades. Sometimes just in a demonstration outside, often on the press benches reporting a hearing, and many times in the public gallery - and a few times in the dock.

It's a shame that a place which is so much part of London's history ended up being closed down; but I'm glad a bit of it has been preserved as a museum.

I was based at Tottenham Court Road Police Station from 12th June 1979. The night shift officers would always try to arrest offenders so that they could go to Bow Street Magistrates Court in the morning, thereby incurring overtime.
Two beggars provided perhaps two of the court’s lighter moments…
1. It was only attempted begging your worship as l hadn’t made anything when they arrested me.”
2. Another appeared after being apprehended playing a mouth organ while begging. He claimed to be giving a recital and not begging. A point the arresting officer disagreed with. The magistrate ordered him to be taken out of court and the matter of his ability settled. When the next two defendants were brought in the strains of the mouth organ could be heard in the background as he was put through his paces. Eventually the gaoler stuck his head round the door and told the magistrate that he could play. To be honest l cannot remember the outcome of the case.
